At Digitize Designs, we can help you reverse engineer parts and products with our 3D scanning services. Reverse engineering is a useful technique to replicate or modify existing objects and is a particularly valuable way to replace obsolete or discontinued parts, modify faulty components, or update old parts. Some also use reverse engineering to understand how products work by dissecting their strengths and weaknesses and applying that knowledge to their own products, known as competitive analysis. However, objects generally do not come with their own CAD models, and it would be tedious to create the object from scratch. With 3D scanning, you can easily and accurately convert your physical object into digital data that can be machined, printed, modified, customized, or updated as you please.
Using 3D Scanning to Reverse Engineer Objects
First, the physical part must be 3D scanned, and the 3D scanner converts the data into a 3D mesh. A 3D mesh is a model made of polygons that represents the structure of the object. Using this 3D mesh, the object is rebuilt in CAD software, and we verify that the CAD and mesh are free from errors and accurately represent the object before finalizing the data. We can then output the data into a variety of formats, such as STEP, IGES, PDF, Solidworks, or STL, all depending on your personal needs.
Reverse engineering may seem daunting at first, but we can help you take the first steps on your reverse engineering journey. We take great pride in our expertise in the many diverse applications of 3D scanning and printing, offering reverse engineering and 3D scanning services, 3D scanners, and 3D software so that we can help every customer find exactly what service or product is right for them.
